Raging All the Way to the Polls
Tue May 09, 2006 at 12:10:33 PM PDT
We are, apparently, the angry left. We are a "
digital lynch mob." Richard Cohen thinks that we're going to hurt the Democrats with our crazy ranting. Perhaps Cohen, however, should take a look at both sides of the political spectrum before he starts making accusations.
Are you patriotic?
Sat May 06, 2006 at 04:28:34 PM PDT
Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.
- Howard Zinn*
I don't really like the word "patriotic." In the past, I've equated patriotism with blind loyalty to the country, going along with anything in the name of America. I still sometimes cringe when I hear the word. But, having read others' ideas about patriotism, I've realized that patriotism, like many words that are being tossed around easily today, cannot be easily defined. According to some people, despite my hatred toward the current administration and my adamant position against the war, I would be considered patriotic.
A Brief History of Consumerism
Thu May 04, 2006 at 06:26:57 AM PDT
A couple good diaries have been written recently on consumerism. (
Here's one of them. There are links to others within it.) Our society didn't become this way overnight. In order for people to be able to buy lots and lots of things, we needed factories and mass production. Below, I have written a very, very brief history of how industrialization led to the consumer culture that exists today. Lots more can be, and have been, written about this topic, and I urge you to read about it.

After last night's discussion about the
Worst Generation in All History, I figured we should see if we can also choose which decade was the worst. Below, I have provided you with information about each of the decades from the 1920s to the present. Please read the following descriptions carefully and then choose which one you feel has destroyed America.
Do Something, or My God, Another Colbert Diary
Tue May 02, 2006 at 05:33:16 AM PDT
In 1980, Ronald Reagan was elected President. In 2003, Arnold Schwarzeneggar became the governor of California. Last week, my mother said she wants George Clooney to be our president. And this week, people on Daily Kos are flooding the site with diaries about Stephen Colbert and his stand against the administration and the press.
Satire: Exposing Vice and Folly
Mon May 01, 2006 at 03:34:05 AM PDT
SATIRE, n. An obsolete kind of literary composition in which the vices and follies of the author's enemies were expounded with imperfect tenderness. In this country satire never had more than a sickly and uncertain existence, for the soul of it is wit, wherein we are dolefully deficient, the humor that we mistake for it, like all humor, being tolerant and sympathetic.
- Ambrose Bierce
Many diaries have been written about Stephen Colbert in the past couple of days, and yes, this is another one. Bear with me here. People are commending Colbert for a job well done, for standing up to the President. But Colbert is a comedian, he is a satirist. And much like Jonathan Swift exposed the problems of the British government, Colbert has used satire to expose the madness of the Bush administration.
